Is Elizabeth Bennet a typical Regency woman?

No. She is too intelligent, too logical, too rational, too emotional, and too outspoken. She is a Sagittarius! (ha) And to Jane Austen (also Sagittarius!) she is an ideal that will never and can never be realised. Too many modern readers and aficionados like to believe that JA was a feminist in a post-1970s vein, and she definitely was not. She believed that women and men do have different spheres; her great contribution to what we know as modern feminism is that she believed the woman’s sphere of influence in 1790-1815 was vastly larger than most women of her day realised. She endeavoured to show women that they should push the envelope and take charge of what it was appropriate to take charge of.
For example, Lizzy speaks up to Lady Catherine about her sister’s preferences to be ‘out’ whilst she herself remains unmarried and not dating by choice. Lady Catherine chastises her for being so outspoken, even though Lizzy’s comment only sounds sensible to us today. Lady Catherine is more a typical 1790s woman– young women should be seen and not heard and in any case show proper deference to a widowed countess.
My favourite is in the TV video (unfortunately NOT in the book) of ‘Northanger Abbey’ when little Cathy Morland is dancing in front of Jonathan Thorpe and he calls over to her, ‘I thought you were going to dance with me.’
- ‘That’s funny, Mr Thorpe, for you never asked me.’ And off she goes.
- Henry Tilney, dancing with her, observes this and means to compliment her– ‘Dancing is so like marriage. Fidelity and politeness are most important in each.’ (forgive my from-memory paraphrase)
- ‘But they are so very different things,’ Cathy says.
- ‘How so? In both the gentleman has the advantage of choice, the woman only the power of refusal.’
- Cathy, thinking of her comment to Thorpe, then says, ‘My dear Mr Tilney, never underestimate the woman’s power of refusal.’
THIS is JA’s point about the power of 1790s women– perhaps their sphere is limited, but it’s still got more room in it than the average woman (or girl, in Cathy’s case) would realise. Use what you do have, JA would tell you; and you do have some influence over the world. (It’s also what Emmett tells Elle Woods in ‘Legally Blonde’, a movie that owes much more to JA than modern people may admit.)
‘Northanger’ is an excellent example of a comparison, done in 1797, of the ‘typical’ Regency-era woman with what could or should be. For example Cathy reads gothic novels and imagines her life as it might be in one of those books; but when she opens her eyes (or her eyes are opened) she realises her own life is both as adventurous and as safe as any smart woman would like hers to be; and so she can capitalise on that awareness and ‘grow up’ to the ‘real world’.
LIzzy Bennet is an outgrowth of the earlier-developed character Cathy Morland because she is more self-aware, more educated, and more courageous; as when she dances with Darcy a first time and thinks only to belittle him in her own way. This is NOT the same kind of belittling Isabel Thorpe does to Tilney’s brother in ‘Northanger’, which today we would call the machinations of a ‘b*tch’ or a skank. LIzzy meets Darcy head-on, as his equal –’By marrying him I should not think of myself as quitting that sphere. He is a gentleman; I am a gentleman’s daughter; thus far we are equals.’ In as much she never considers herself as less than he is, even when she is obviously awed by his genuine act of extreme generosity towards her family at the end. In that way she IS the prize; but in so being she is also every bit his best match, and he knows this.
As in ‘Northanger’ the best example of the non-JA 1790s ideal would be those heroines in the gothic novels Cathy reads (and which JA had definitely read), as typified by writer Ann Radcliffe– young, gullible, weak, innocent yet secretive, needy, essentially terrified of greater life– is Lizzy Bennet like that at all?
